ASME B16.11 Socket Welding Fittings

Socket welding is used to join pipes together using a variety of fittings. This makes it possible to change the direction and diameter of pipe networks and add branches to existing pipelines.

The pipes go into the socket weld fitting, which has a space for the pipe, making it easy to put in place. Once the pipe is in place, it can be held in place with fillet welds around its outer diameter. This is done so that there is a gap at the bottom of the socket to prevent a stress failure.
