The end of a pipe is covered by a pipe fitting called a stainless steel butt weld cap. Since it can have female threads, it can be screwed onto the male end of the pipe. It can also be welded to the end of the pipe to close it off. On a weld, if it is a temporary close or if the contractor wants to add to the piping system in the future, he or she should leave extra pipe before closing so that the pipe cap can be cut off and the pipe system can be extended as needed. This way, you won't have less pipe than you need, and you'll be able to connect the new fitting correctly.
