What is Paper Industry?

The pulp and paper business consists of enterprises that make pulp, paper, paperboard, and other cellulose-based goods from wood.

The paper and pulp industries annually consume vast quantities of resources, such as wood and water, and generate vast quantities of solid waste and waste water that must be processed. During paper manufacture, various types of waste are generated, including particle, solid, gas, and water waste. Typically, developed wastes are not properly managed, and waste water is allowed to interact with water resources such as rivers. In order to process these wastes in an eco-friendly manner and to extract energy from these wastes, it is necessary to identify relevant techniques. This chapter focuses on the history of papermaking, papermaking techniques, waste types and their origins, as well as the features and methods for transforming these wastes into useable energy. The methods of incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion, and biodiesel production for converting paper mill wastes into energy are discussed, and it is determined that anaerobic digestion is the most common method for wastewater, while incineration is the most common method for solid wastes. It was also determined that the production of biofuels from these wastes was viable.

What metal materials used in Paper Industry?

The paper industry uses various metal materials for different applications. Some of the commonly used metals in the paper industry are:

  1. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is used in the paper industry for various applications, such as fabricating paper machine components, pipes, tanks, and vessels. It is resistant to corrosion and has excellent strength and durability, making it ideal for use in harsh environments.

  2. Carbon Steel: Carbon steel is another commonly used metal in the paper industry. It is used in the construction of paper machines, storage tanks, and other components that require high strength and durability.

  3. Aluminum: Aluminum is used in the paper industry for applications that require lightweight and corrosion-resistant materials. It is used in the construction of drying cylinders, ventilation ducts, and other equipment.

  4. Copper: Copper is used in the paper industry for the manufacture of wire mesh and screens used in the papermaking process. It is also used in heat exchangers and other equipment that requires good thermal conductivity.

  5. Brass: Brass is used in the paper industry for the manufacture of valves, fittings, and other components that require corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties.

  6. Zinc: Zinc is used in the paper industry for galvanizing steel components, such as wire mesh and screens, to provide corrosion resistance.

Overall, the selection of metal materials in the paper industry depends on the specific application and the properties required for the equipment or component.

What nickel alloy metal used in Paper Industry?

Nickel alloy metals are commonly used in the paper industry due to their excellent resistance to corrosion and high-temperature performance. One such nickel alloy metal that is frequently used in the paper industry is Inconel 600.

Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy with good high-temperature strength and excellent resistance to corrosion in a variety of environments, including oxidizing and reducing environments. Its high nickel content (72%) provides good resistance to alkaline solutions and organic acids, while its chromium content (14%) provides good resistance to oxidizing agents.

In the paper industry, Inconel 600 is used in applications such as:

  1. Pulp and paper digesters, where it can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environments.

  2. Bleaching equipment, where it can resist the corrosive effects of chlorine and other bleaching chemicals.

  3. Steam supply systems, where it can withstand the high temperatures and pressures of steam.

  4. Paper machine frames and components, where it can resist the corrosive effects of chemicals used in the papermaking process.

Overall, Inconel 600 is a versatile and reliable nickel alloy metal that is well-suited for use in the paper industry.
